E-Textiles

Our E-Textile workshops

Our range of E-Textile learning opportunities aims to give participants an understanding of the basic principles of soft electronics.  We offer a mix of introductory, intermediate and advanced level workshops. For groups of 10 and over, we are able to customise our E-Textile workshops and arrange mutually convenient dates and times.

Soft circuits and sensors (E-Textile Introductory Level)

This half-day workshop is an introduction to soft circuits and sensors. During the workshop participants will be introduced to what e-textiles are and how we can use them in our everyday lives.  Participants will make a soft circuit with an LED light that is activated by various soft sensors including a pressure sensor, a stretch sensor and a tilt sensor.  The skills gained in this workshop can be applied to creative activities such as e-textiles, smart garments, crafts and soft toys.

Papertronics and smart dough (E-Textile Introductory Level)

This half-day workshop is an introduction to paper circuits, conductive materials (hard and soft) and sensors. During the workshop participants will be introduced to what paper circuits are and how we can use them.  Participants will make a paper circuit with copper tape and an LED light that is activated by different sensors including a pressure sensor.  The skills gained in this workshop can be applied to creative activities such as interactive art, micro games, storytelling, crafts and card making.

Body sensing with shapes and sounds (E-Textile Advanced Level)

This advanced level 1-day workshop uses soft circuits and sensors.  Participants will make a finger switch, a bend sensor and a stroke sensor.  You will activate these sensors through the movement of the body such as the bend of an elbow or knee.  The skills gained in this workshop can be applied to creative activities such as e-textiles, smart garments and wearable sensing devices.  Participants must have attended the Intermediate Level E-Textiles and Coding workshop prior to attending this workshop.

E-Textiles and coding (E-Textile Intermediate Level)

This intermediate level 1-day workshop is an introduction to coding using a sewable Lilypad Arduino micro-controller. Participants will learn how to code the Lilypad micro-controller and make a basic smart garment.  The skills gained in this workshop can be applied to creative activities such as e-textiles, smart garments and  crafts.  Participants must have attended one of the Introductory Level E-Textile workshops prior to attending this workshop.

Plug and play (E-Textile Intermediate Level)

This intermediate level 1-day workshop is an introduction to interactive plug and play options where novices can connect with devices, without coding expertise.  During the workshop participants will be introduced to what plug and play options are and how we can use them, particularly in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) related projects.  Participants will design and make a computer controller with everyday conductive materials and make musical circuits with fruits!  The skills gained in this workshop will assist STEM educators and those interested in interactive art, games and storytelling.  Participants must have attended one of the Introductory Level E-Textile workshops prior to attending this workshop.
