Workshops and short courses

Our  2 day short courses are designed to help participants upskill on their chosen subject with minimal time commitment.  Our presenters are specialists in their fields and have many years of industry experience, which they will share with you. Our range of subjects includes: textile knowledge, digital textile design, 3-D fashion design, knitwear design, Wholegarment (seamless) knitting, electronic textiles, weaving and machine felting. The courses and workshops are not credit bearing but certificates of attendance will be issued when requested.

What we offer

INTRODUCTION TO TEXTILES
This course has been designed to help those entering or currently engaged in the fashion, apparel and textile industries to improve their technical awareness and to gain a wider appreciation of the many facets of the ‘textile pipeline'.
KNITWEAR DESIGN
This 2 day short course introduces the Shima Seiki Apex Design System for knitwear. This is a specialised programme designed specifically for use with Shima Seiki knitting technology.
PHOTOSHOP BASICS FOR TEXTILE DESIGN
This introductory level short course is run over 2 days and introduces the use of Photoshop as a design tool for digital textile printing. An understanding of Photoshop functions and working with layers will be gained from this course.
DIGITAL TEXTILE DESIGN: REPEATING PATTERNS
This short course provides intermediate level Photoshop skills for textile design. It focuses on creating repeating patterns for both fashion and textile applications using digital printing technology.
E-TEXTILES WORKSHOP
Our E-Textile workshops give participants an understanding of the basic principles of soft electronics.
INTRODUCTION TO WOVEN TEXTILES
These two 1-day workshops offer both weaving theory and design as well as practical weaving on the lab's TC2 digital loom. The theory and design workshop must be taken prior to attending the practical session.
INTRODUCTION TO WHOLEGARMENT (SEAMLESS) KNITTING
This two-day intensive workshop introduces the Shima Seiki Apex Design system for Wholegarment (seamless) knitting. Wholegarment knitting allows for garments to be produced in one piece directly on the knitting machine with minimal post-fabrication finishing required.
CLO 3D DESIGN WORKSHOP
In this Introductory CLO 3D workshop you will learn the basics of how to navigate around this 3D Fashion Design programme using the relevant virtual sewing and pattern making construction tools to develop a garment.
MACHINE FELTING
The lab’s Feltloom is accessible to small groups and individuals who would like to get hands-on and learn about the needle felting process, materials and design options for producing their own felted materials.
INTRODUCTION TO JACQUARD KNITTING
A 2-day intensive workshop introduces the Shima Seiki Apex system to create knitted jacquard designs using both the Design and Knit software.
