ECC NZ Student Craft Design Awards success

Congratulations to TDL staff member and Master of Creative Technologies graduate, Dan Collings, who won both the Fashion category and the overall Supreme Award at the 2021 ECC NZ Student Craft Design Awards held at the Dowse Art Museum, Wellington. Dan developed a knitwear collection as part of his master's research that was made using the technology and support of the Textile and Design Lab.

Lab featured in Digital Weaving Norway’s Maker Space

Digital Weaving Norway has featured AUT’s Textile and Design Lab in its latest Makers’ Space profile, which was published earlier this month. The Norwegian company has been providing home weavers, creatives and educational institutes with digital weaving looms for around 25 years. The lab commissioned its first TC2 loom in early 2020 and enables researchers and fabric developers to create customised woven fabrics in modest quantities in a very short timeframe. The lab also offers weaving workshops, the next of which will be held in February.

School of Future Environments student awards

Congratulations to School of Future Environments students Jade Harrison, Paige Harris and Cameron Ball who were the winners of this year’s Textile and Design Lab sponsored awards.

London conference presentation

PhD student and TDL staff member, Mitali Nautiyal, was one of two overseas students whose work was selected for presentation at the recent London College of Fashion’s online conference, entitled ‘Waste-me-not: a collective responsibility in the fashion and textile lifecycle’.  Mitali’s doctoral research focuses on the environmental impact of the textile industry, intending to develop a design tool that can be used to evaluate the environmental sustainability of apparel products. Her presentation considered establishing sustainability through Life Cycle Assessment.

TDL in the news

TV One’s consumer affairs programme, Fair Go, requested the help of TDL manager, Peter Heslop, earlier this month to give his opinion on the durability of outdoor furnishing fabrics.  The programme highlighted a dispute between a Tauranga customer and retail furniture company, Freedom.

2022 short course and workshop dates

Dates for our next round of short courses and workshops to be held in February and March have been finalised and registrations are now open via the TDL website  Our short course programme comprises of the following subjects:

Holiday closure dates

The lab will close for the summer break from 4.30 pm on Thursday 23 December and reopen on Monday 17 January.
